Bail is posted as collateral to guarantee a person will appear in court to face charges brought against them. In most cases, full amount of bail is not easily assessable and a bail bondsman is used to guarantee the money and to deal with the individual if they do not appear for court.
What is not universally known is that the bondsman requires a 12% payment from the individual and that money is money spent. It is NOT refunded after the court date.

10.05.11 - Christopher Hebert
charged with stalking and cyberstalking
Lafayette police arrested Christopher Hebert and charged him with stalking and cyberstalking. Those charges stem from a Lafayette Parish woman's complaint claiming Hebert threatened her via the internet and over phone messages dating back to November, 2010.
Corporal Paul Mouton with the Lafayette Police Department could not give specific details about comments allegedly made by Hebert to the woman.
Cpl. Mouton adds that Hebert's stalking and cyberstalking charges are not associated with Busted in Acadiana.
As of Wednesday night, Hebert was still being held at the Lafayette Parish bond on $50,000 for the two charges. He's due in court Friday morning.
